It's Hurricane Season - What's Your Plan?
Arlene, Bret, Cindy, Don, Emily – what do these have in common? Well they aren’t people, they are hurricanes, and they have either already been here or they are on the way. Mid August – late October marks peak season for those of us on the Atlantic Coast. Here are two questions you should ask yourself: Am I prepared? Have I looked over my South Carolina Home Insurance policy lately?

According to the National Hurricane Center, here are the steps you should take to better prepare yourself for a hurricane:
- Develop a Family Plan: Meet with your family and determine what you will do if you are asked to evacuate
- Creating a Supply Kit: This includes items such as 3-day supply of drinking water and food, change of clothing, blankets, flashlights, medicines, first aid kit, emergency tools, and batteries.
- Having a Place to Go: Learn the inland evacuation routes and find a hotel or choose a friend or family member’s home to stay safe.
- Securing Your Home: It is important to plan ahead on how to secure the windows and doors of your home. Heavy plywood or metal shutters are most often use.
If you have pets, it is important to include their necessities in the planning process. Include your pet’s food, leash, litter, carrier, medication, and medical records in the supply kit. You will need to make sure that your safe location is pet friendly. If it is not, plan accordingly by checking out the boarding facilities near your destination.
It is better late than never, but the earlier you prepare for a hurricane the better off you will be.
